Understand The Use Of Fragrances In Subliminal Advertising
and
Save Your Money
Did you know that there are fragrances used commercially to encourage you to buy? Up until recently, I had no clue to the extent fragrances (ambient scents) were used in this manner. A couple of months ago, I was listening to a CD on managing my money and was surprised by what I was learning.
I knew fragrances affected our mood --- I've experienced it many times and have written about it. This is a knotch above. These fragrances are 'designed' to affect our behavior!
I knew there were some stores that blatantly used fragrances to attract their young customers -- like Hollister and Abercrombie & Fitch. My daughter is drawn into those stores, and loves the perfume scent they spray everywhere. Even going as far as finding the perfume spray bottle that they use to spray the store with their signature fragrance left on a shelf by an employee, and spraying herself with it.
But these are not the only stores using scents to get customers to buy. Most are much more subtle. Patented fragrances - ambient scents - that are scientifically proven to encourage desired behavior are worth millions of dollars.
There are fragrances that make you feel good, relaxed and put you in a "buying mood", that are used in stores and malls. And it's not just the clothing stores pumping fragrances into the air. Think of the power of a video rental chain experimenting with different fragrances in sections of the store -- hint of rose in the romance section, anyone? How about eau de gunpowder around the action films. Or a touch of vanilla around the snacks.
Certain hotels also blow fragrances in through their air systems. Their reasoning is that it masks unpleasant smells in the rooms. Yet, it can be very detrimental to people with sensitivities to these high-tech scents.
Casinos favor fragrances that encourage their patrons to take risks -- read here, spend more money at the casino gambling. Casinos will even use different fragrances in different areas to encourage the behavior they want in that area.
What does this all mean to you? Knowing that fragrances are used commercially to encourage your behavior, you have more control over your purchasing decisions.
So, next time you're shopping and find yourself lured to purchase more than you planned, stop for a moment and think about what external influences are at work, putting you in a "buying mood". Then don't make the extra purchases at that time. If you still want the item/s the next day, then go back and buy them.
The CD I was listening to was one by Raymond Aaron.
